The medal was awarded to the opera singer Sara Jane Cahier (1875-1951) on 31. October 1909.Frederik VIII only awarded nine of these medals - eight to women and one to a man.
Cahier was American by birth but was educated in France. She was for a long time associated with the court opera in Vienna with the title of Austro-Hungarian royal and imperial court opera singer. She often performed in Copenhagen.
