The Greek Royal House became Danish in 1863, when Prince Christian's (IX) son Vilhelm became King of Greece on request of the British; he took the name George I. A Greek delegation led by admiral Kanaris, a hero of
the Greek War of Independence, arrived in Copenhagen to negotiate the conditions.
During the reign of George I, Greece saw significant changes, and the wishes to expand the territory were fulfilled. In 1912-13 the last Greek provinces in the north were conquered. During the victorious troops' entry
into Saloniki in 1913, George I was killed by an insane person, a few weeks before his 50-years jubilee.
After the presentation, there was a display of King George's Medal of Recompense, which design and ribbon was closely related to the Danish equvalent medal. The OMSD Journal no. 62, 2024 has an article describing the
Greek Medal of Recompense. All classes of the Order of George I were also on display. This order was instituted in 1915 by George I's son Constantine I to commemorate his father. The order was abolished with the
establishment of the Hellenic republic.
