It could hardly be more relevant, the OMSD event on May 13th about the Florence Nightingale Medal. Some hours earlier, the International Committee of the Red Cross sent out a list of recipients of the medal, which is awarded
every second year on May 12th to nurses and nursing aides (both men and women) for exceptional courage and devotion. That day is the birthday for the mother of modern nursing, the British nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).
She distinguished herself during the Crimean War 1854-56 and later in the training of nurses.
The medal was first awarded in 1920, and one of the decorated was the Danish nurse Magdalena (Lena) Tidemand.
In the period 1920-2025, a total of 48 Danish nurses have received the medal, including 4 male nurses. On this year's occasion on May 12th, it was Susanne Norby Bojesen who was decorated. A total of 35 medals were awarded
this year to nurses from 17 countries. The first male Danish nurse to receive the medal was Jesper Jørgensen in 2001.
Jan René West was the presenter of the medal and its history at the OMSD event. The presentation included a short description of some of the Danish recipients.
